Before Pafos FC were travelling across Europe and writing their Champions League story, football in the city looked very different. The modern club may have been formed in 2014 from the merger of local sides, but the roots of the game in Pafos go back decades – through teams like APOP, Evagoras and later AEP Pafos, the clubs that carried the flag for the district long before the new era began. In this episode, we rewind the clock to those earlier days with former APOP striker Bentley Rob, a Londoner from Walthamstow who somehow found himself playing football on the other side of Europe in the early 1980s. Rob had two spells with APOP and experienced Cypriot football at a time when the game was raw, unpredictable and driven by local passion rather than foreign investment. He tells the story of how a Brit ended up in Pafos, what life was like playing in Cyprus in that era, and the characters, chaos and culture that surrounded football in the district long before the modern Pafos project arrived.
