Omonoia’s first ever trip to Gibraltar was a rocky one, very nearly was a disastrous one, but still lackluster at best. When the dust settled, Omonoia played to a 1-1 draw away to Lincoln Red Imps in a UEFA Europa League qualifier. Heavily favored Omonoia were outplayed for long stretches of time and did fall behind. Panayiotis Andreou came to the rescue late to at least prevent a loss, but after last week’s collapse in Kazakhstan, no Omonoia supporter will be happy with this one. From a pragmatic standpoint, Omonoia are still in decent shape to progress in next week’s return leg at home, but make no mistake about it, they were not good today. Omonoia visited Lincoln Red Imps at Europa Point Stadium in Gibraltar. Mihlali Mayambela put an early attempt off target. Then Ewandro Costa had a shot that was blocked in front by Julliani Eersteling, it came back to him and he put it wide. Nicolas Clara Pinto had the first shot on target, but Fabiano made the save. Clara Pinto later had another chance and did not miss the net by much. Panayiotis Andreou was the first to force Jaylan Hankins to a save. Halftime came, no score between the two sides. The second half got off to a similarly sluggish start, but the hosts eventually would strike first. Facundo Alvarez delivered a corner that found the head of Christian Rutjens, who buried the header past Fabiano, 1-0 for Lincoln Red Imps in the 71st minute. In stoppage time however, Omonoia were at least spared the total embarrassment of what would have been a loss of historic proportions. Muamer Tankovic took a free kick that caromed around to Ewandro Costa. Hankins made the save but Panayiotis Andreou pounced on the rebound and fired it past Hankins to allow Omonoia to salvage a 1-1 draw. Lincoln Red Imps(Juan Manuel Pavon): 13. Jaylan Hankins(GK), 5.
