In a development that could have far-reaching implications for Cypriot football, independent criminal investigator Alexandra Lykourgou has reportedly submitted her findings to the Attorney General of the Republic, George Savvides, according to an article published by Politis newspaper. The report focuses on the criminal investigation into a potential conflict of interest involving the President of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA), George Koumas. According to Politis, the contents of the report include serious allegations and are believed to outline potential criminal offences not only linked to Mr. Koumas but also to other individuals involved in the case. If the claims are confirmed, they could trigger significant upheaval within the structure of Cypriot football. Despite the publication of the report, the Legal Services have remained tight-lipped. In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, officials refrained from confirming receipt of the report and emphasised that the investigation is ongoing. “The inquiry has not yet been concluded,” a spokesperson stated. Public interest in the matter is growing rapidly, with attention now firmly on the Attorney General’s next steps. His stance and eventual decisions are expected to have a lasting impact, not only on the credibility of the CFA but also on the overall integrity of the sport in Cyprus. Meanwhile, a separate report from Phileleftheros sheds light on the possibility of league manipulation. According to the newspaper, investigators relied on testimonies previously provided by three former football officials. These individuals alleged that Mr. Koumas had unilaterally distributed funds received from CyTA (Cyprus Telecommunications Authority) for broadcasting rights to football clubs, based on his own discretion and timing. The coming days may prove decisive for both Koumas and the future of Cypriot football.
