A stunning and historic night for Pafos FC, who claimed their first-ever victory in the Champions League League Phase by defeating Spanish side Villarreal 1–0 on Matchday 4. Carlos Carcedo’s team, apart from the opening ten minutes when they were under pressure, delivered an outstanding performance. Organised and composed, they kept Villarreal at bay in the first half and went into the break with the score level at 0–0. Just two minutes after the restart, Pafos struck the decisive blow. In the 47th minute, Sema’s pinpoint corner found Luckassen, whose towering header beat Junior to make it 1–0. From that moment, Villarreal – known as the “Yellow Submarine” — pushed hard for an equaliser, but goalkeeper Neofytos Michael produced a series of excellent saves to preserve his clean sheet. Pafos held firm until the final whistle, securing a famous and historic win that earned them three points and €2.1 million in prize money. The result lifts the Cypriot champions to five points, keeping their hopes of qualification for the next round very much alive. The game started at a lively pace, with both teams creating chances early on. Quina fired wide for Pafos in the second minute, before Villarreal responded immediately with a Pepe free-kick that went just over. Moments later, Mikautadze missed a good chance, and in the ninth minute, Gueye went one-on-one with Michael — only for the Cypriot goalkeeper to produce a brilliant save. After that, Pafos grew into the game, enjoying more possession and restricting Villarreal’s attacking rhythm. The Spaniards had a couple of half-chances before the interval, but nothing that troubled Michael, and the first half ended goalless. Pafos came flying out of the blocks after half-time. In the 47th minute, Sema’s corner was met by Luckassen, whose bullet header gave Pafos the lead. Villarreal reacted immediately, dominating possession and creating several opportunities, but Michael remained unbeatable – denying Gueye, Pepe, and Solomon with superb saves. In stoppage time, he stopped a fierce shot from Comesaña to seal the result. When the final whistle blew, the stadium erupted. Pafos had just taken down Villarreal – a Champions League regular – to record their first-ever win in Europe’s top competition. A night that will live forever in Cypriot football history.
