The dream has become reality. Pafos FC have secured their place in the Champions League League Phase, becoming only the third Cypriot club in history to achieve this feat, after Anorthosis and APOEL. A late goal from Brazilian winger Jaja sealed a dramatic evening at the Alphamega Stadium and ensured the club’s debut on European football’s grandest stage. How the Match Unfolded The opening exchanges were balanced, with both sides looking to impose themselves. Pafos threatened first through Pepe, whose long-range effort skimmed past the upright after five minutes, while Bruno delivered a dangerous cross soon after that went unconverted. Red Star gradually began to dictate possession, forcing Pafos deeper, but they struggled to find a breakthrough. The hosts came close in the 34th minute when Anderson’s header drew an excellent save from goalkeeper Matheus, while Correia’s shot on the stroke of half-time was diverted behind for a corner. The first half closed goalless, with little to separate the two sides. Red Star emerged with greater intent after the restart and applied sustained pressure on the Pafos defence. Their dominance was rewarded on 60 minutes when captain Ivanic struck from the edge of the area. His effort deflected off Lukassen, wrong-footed Michael in goal, and found the net to bring the tie level on aggregate. The Serbian champions remained on top for much of the second half, while Pafos were restricted to counterattacks that lacked a decisive final pass. Nevertheless, the Cypriots gradually regained their composure. Jaja tested Matheus in the 81st minute, and moments later Bruno went close with a near-post effort. The Decisive Moment With the clock approaching 90 minutes, Pafos won a free-kick just outside the Red Star penalty area. The delivery was met by Jaja, whose improvised touch sent the ball looping over the goalkeeper and into the net. The stadium erupted as Pafos drew level on the night and edged back in front on aggregate. A Landmark for Cypriot Football Despite Red Star’s control for long stretches, Juan Carlos Carcedo’s side displayed resilience, organisation, and belief in the defining moments. Jaja goal not only delivered qualification but also cemented a historic achievement for the city and the club. Pafos now join Anorthosis and APOEL in the annals of Cypriot football, their name added to the select list of clubs to have reached the Champions League group stage. For a team only recently emerging on the domestic scene, the night will be remembered as the moment their European dream took shape.
