The investigation into the 17th October murder of businessman Stavros Demosthenous has entered a new phase, with fresh evidence presented in court between 4th and 15th November helping authorities clarify the alleged roles of the four suspects referred to trial.

New material brought before the Limassol District Court has strengthened the case against the accused, with prosecutors outlining a clearer structure of involvement and forensic findings linking key individuals to the crime scene and getaway vehicles.

31-year-old Georgian Identified as Key Figure

According to evidence presented in court, investigators now consider the 31-year-old Georgian a central figure in the murder plot.

A hat recovered near the site where the perpetrators burned the white van was found to contain the suspect’s DNA, while forensic examination also detected gunshot residue particles on the fabric. Authorities say this suggests the hat was worn by someone who either fired a weapon or was positioned close to where a gun was discharged.

This discovery is viewed as one of the most significant pieces of evidence since the investigation began.

Roles of the Remaining Suspects

The updated case file outlines the following alleged roles:

– 30-year-old convicted prisoner: believed to have issued instructions from his prison cell, including directing the purchase of the motorcycle used during the escape.
– 30-year-old Greek Cypriot: allegedly involved in facilitating the acquisition of the motorcycle.
– 51-year-old Greek national: his DNA was reportedly found on a fuel container located inside a stolen vehicle believed to have been used during a “rehearsal run” prior to the murder.

The 51-year-old had previously been arrested, released by the court due to insufficient evidence, and later re-arrested after the DNA match was confirmed. He has since been released again under conditions as the court awaits final decisions on remand.

Witness Claims Getaway Rider Wore Carnival Mask

A new witness statement obtained by police claims that the motorcycle rider fleeing the scene wore a carnival-style mask depicting an elderly man. Investigators believe the mask was used to obscure the suspect’s identity.

Court to Decide on Remand

The Court has ruled that three of the suspects will remain in custody until Monday, when a decision will be announced on whether they will be held on remand until the trial begins.
The 51-year-old suspect has been released under strict conditions pending that ruling.
