Omonoia 29M Proposes Super Liga Format

Omonoia 29M have put forward an ambitious proposal for the restructuring of Cypriot football through the creation of a new Cypriot Super Liga.

Key elements of the format:

  • Two divisions of 12 teams each

  • Each team plays 22 regular-season matches (home and away)

  • Split into Championship and Relegation Playoffs, with each group playing each other twice

  • Total: 32 matches per season

Promotion and relegation would include:

  • 2 automatic spots

  • A playoff between the 3rd-placed team in the lower division and the 10th-placed team in the top division

The league would be managed by a non-football CEO—inspired by the English Premier League model—with each club having equal voting rights.

Three distinct committees would oversee operations:

  • Matchday Committee – Refereeing, rules, and scheduling

  • Business Committee – Sponsorship, marketing, and commercial rights

  • Development Committee – Academies, women’s football, and grassroots initiatives

A unified TV rights model is also proposed, where a central body would negotiate broadcasting deals on behalf of the league.

Omonoia Nicosia Tables Wider CFA Restructuring Blueprint

Just one day later, Omonoia Nicosia released a comprehensive two-year plan to overhaul the Cyprus Football Association (CFA), aiming to transition to a club-governed league system with full transparency and accountability.

Highlights of the proposal include:

  • Regular digital and in-person board meetings

  • Quarterly General Assemblies with club presidents

  • Referee evaluations and financial transparency through public dashboards

  • External audits and legal groundwork for a new governance framework

The long-term vision is the establishment of an independent professional league, where clubs control marketing, TV rights, and competition organisation—while the CFA retains oversight of national teams, amateur football, and judiciary functions.
