Anorthosis Famagusta’s Sporting Director, Antonio Prieto, has become the target of an arson attack, after his personal vehicle was deliberately set ablaze in the early hours of the morning.

According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 3:30am, while the 60-year-old Spaniard’s car was parked at his residence. The vehicle was quickly engulfed in flames, prompting the fire service to respond to the scene. Although the blaze was eventually extinguished, the car was completely destroyed, with significant damage also caused to the covered parking area.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire was set intentionally, and police inquiries are ongoing. Authorities are expected to take a statement from Prieto as part of efforts to establish the motive behind the attack.

Sources close to 24Sports.com.cy have revealed that Prieto had previously expressed concerns to police just two weeks earlier, following a specific football match, warning of a possible attack against him. Investigators are now examining whether the incident is linked to football matters, though this has yet to be confirmed.

In response to the attack, Anorthosis Famagusta issued an official statement strongly condemning the incident:

Official Club Statement

“Anorthosis Famagusta condemns in the strongest possible terms the arson attack on the vehicle of Mr Antonio Prieto, a valued member of our team.

We sincerely hope that the police will swiftly uncover the facts of the case and that those responsible will be brought to justice.

We also hope that this attack is not connected to Mr Prieto’s professional role in football.

Such acts of violence have no place in sport.”

The incident has sparked concern across the Cypriot football community, with growing calls for improved protection and zero tolerance for violence against football professionals.
