APOEL have had a rough go of it this season for their standards but end it on a good note with a 2-1 win over archrivals Omonoia. Omonoia for their part disappointed after a huge win over league leaders Pafos FC last weekend. Both teams have done well enough to qualify for the playoff phase, Omonoia will finish 4th place with 52 points, APOEL will finish 5th with 43 points. Maximilian Meyer and Algassime Bah scored for APOEL, Mariusz Stepinski scored late to put Omonoia on the board. This was also APOEL’s first match under their fourth manager of the season, Vangelis Samios, a 64 year old Greek manager who runs APOEL’s academy. APOEL and Omonoia faced off at the Stadio GSP in Nicosia, home for both, APOEL were the home side for this one. APOEL had the first real chance with Marius Corbu getting a free header, but it went well wide. Corbu not too long after released a shot while falling, and it was surprisingly close, buzzing the crossbar, but it stayed out. APOEL continued to press and Gabriel Maioli centered for Maximilian Meyer, but he too put it over the net. Meyer then put one on target, but it was calmly knocked aside by the Omonoia keeper, Fabiano. There was no score at halftime. Omonoia opened the second half looking to create their own chances. Ewandro Costa had a go from distance which was never a threat to Vid Belec. At the other end, in the 59th minute, APOEL struck first. Issam Chebake put in a cross that found Meyer, and with an objectively masterful volley put the ball into the top corner past Fabiano, making it 1-0 for APOEL. Omonoia tried to respond quickly, Fotis Kitsos found himself in some space and put the ball over the net. APOEL looked for the dagger, Kostas Galanopoulos found Meyer in some space, and he unleashed a powerful header, but this time Fabiano came out on top with a highlight reel save to keep Omonoia in it for the time being. The aforementioned dagger, however, was not far behind. APOEL with the corner, Marquinhos played it in and Fabiano punched it away, but only as far as Algassime Bah’s head. Bah’s header stayed in the air for a long time, but Fabiano stumbled trying to get back, and his last desperate jump was in vain. The ball landed in the net, and APOEL were up 2-0 in the 85th minute. A clean sheet for Belec was not in the cards, though. Charalambos Charalambous had a free kick from the side of the box, and he found Mariusz Stepinski in enough space to get off a well-placed header, which beat Belec low. It was too little, too late, however, and APOEL hung on for a 2-1 win. APOEL(Vangelis Samios): 27. Vid Belec(GK, Captain), 7. Maximilian Meyer(’79 10. Marquinhos), 8. Sergio Tejera, 14.
