AEK Larnaca are the 2025 Cypriot Cup champions, claiming the trophy for the third time in their history after a dramatic 5-4 victory on penalties over Pafos FC at the GSP Stadium.

In a final that offered more tension than spectacle, neither side managed to find the breakthrough during 120 minutes of football. It was ultimately goalkeeper Kenan Alomerović who emerged as the hero, saving two spot-kicks in the shootout to secure glory for AEK.

Cagey Start in Regulation Time

The match began with high intensity but limited quality, as both sides approached with caution and defensive discipline. AEK appeared slightly more ambitious in the opening exchanges, looking to assert control and force an early goal. However, clear chances were rare, with both teams neutralising each other in midfield.

The most notable incident came in the 37th minute when Faraj broke through on goal and was brought down by Silva just outside the box. Larnaca players appealed for a red card, but following a VAR check and on-field review, the referee ruled the play offside, nullifying the foul.

The first half ended goalless, lacking any real spark or attacking rhythm.

More of the Same After the Break

The second half followed a similar pattern — compact shapes, few risks, and minimal attacking threat. AEK tried to exploit space with direct balls from Aitor, but Pafos remained alert and well-organised.

A rare chance fell to Silva in the 53rd minute as he delivered a low cross from the left, though Jairo was a step too slow to connect. Roberges later attempted a long-range effort in the 70th minute, but his strike sailed harmlessly over.

Neither side seemed willing to commit fully in the final stages, and with momentum stalling, extra time felt inevitable.

Extra Time: Tired Legs, Tight Contest

Fatigue became a clear factor in extra time, with both teams showing signs of wear. AEK’s Tankovic tried his luck from distance early on, but his shot posed no threat. Minutes later, Cabrera was denied by Ivusic following a slick pass from Chacon, in what was Pafos’ most promising moment.

Tankovic came close again before the break in extra time with a curling effort, but the shot missed the target. With no goals after 120 minutes, penalties would decide the cup winner.

Penalty Shootout: Alomerović the Hero

The shootout was tense and finely poised, with both teams converting four of their opening five penalties. AEK edged ahead thanks to Alomerović, who denied both Goldar and Kina to seal the win.
